Obituary

Stana Lea "Tammy" Garvey, a former attorney with the Office of the Public Defender for Loudoun County, Virginia, died this past January after a long illness. She was 66.

The daughter of Stanley and Margaret Weston of Brooksville, Florida, Ms. Garvey had a multifaceted career that began with a brief stint as a mermaid at nearby Weeki Wachee Springs, a classic Florida tourist attraction, before joining United Air Lines as a flight attendant in 1967.

Based in Washington, D.C., she flew extensively throughout the United States for the next two decades. During her tenure with the carrier, she also assumed various volunteer roles with her union, the Association of Flight Attendants, including that of local grievance chairperson.

Once her flying career concluded, Ms. Garvey entered George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, and earned her bachelor's degree in 1996. Next, she pursued a long-time ambition to enter the legal profession by studying at The School of Law at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during which time she also interned at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. She was awarded a Juris Doctor degree in 1999.

Admitted to the Virginia Bar, she joined the Public Defender's office in Leesburg, Virginia, eventually rising to senior assistant public defender. Although she served the full range of clients represented by the office, Ms. Garvey took a special interest in cases involving children and those suffering from substance abuse issues and addictions. Ms. Garvey was known as a caring, compassionate, dedicated defense advocate for her clients and worked hard to give them a new start. Her clients always felt that they were in good hands when represented by Ms. Garvey.

Married and divorced twice, Ms. Garvey is survived by a son, Michael, of Washington, D.C., and a sister, Betty, of Conyers, Georgia. She was predeceased by her parents, and a brother, George.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, April 6th, in Leesburg, Virginia. Please contact Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg for more information: (703) 777-1414.
