Thomas Morgan “Morgan” Delaney, 75, died June 16, 2026, in Leesburg, Virginia following a series of prolonged health struggles.
Morgan was born in Alexandria, Virginia on March 14, 1951, to Paul and Sarah Delaney. The 4th of five children, he attended local schools where he particularly enjoyed history and literature and played football, basketball and baseball. After graduating from Groveton High School, Morgan first attended Ball State University in Indiana before transferring to Wyndham College in Vermont, where he played basketball and baseball and double majored in English and History.
Following his college graduation, Morgan worked for the City of Alexandria supporting impoverished residents. After several years in that role, Morgan went to work for the Associated Press, where he was employed for more than two decades and from where he retired.
Morgan was married to Shelley Lester Delaney, with whom he shared sons Thomas Brooke Delaney, 40, of Leesburg, and Carter Patrick Ridge Delaney, who predeceased Morgan in 2009 following a tragic accident. Morgan was also grandfather to Camden Alexander, 13; Teagan Kelly, 11; Maverick Carter, 10; McKinleigh Ridge, 8; and Sloan Piper, 6.
Morgan’s favorite pastimes included spending time with his family and lifelong friends; playing baseball and softball in recreational leagues, where he was known as the “Hawk”; shooting pool; collecting vintage toys, including miniature soldiers; listening to music and dancing.
In addition to his son, Thomas, and grandchildren, Camden, Teagan, Maverick, McKinleigh, and Sloan, Morgan is survived by his brother, Paul Delaney of Alexandria, Virginia; his sister Sarah Delaney Largent of Southport, South Carolina; his sister E. Landon Delaney of Purcellville, Virginia; as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Morgan was preceded in death by his parents, son Carter, and his brother, David Delaney.
