Obituary

Walter Wolodymyr Schewciw passed away on 12-5-2016 in Leesburg Virginia.  The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 9 th at St. Theresa Church in Ashburn Virginia with Rev. Richard Guest presiding.  Arrangements are made by Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, Virginia.  Walter's ashes will be interred in a columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery in the Spring following a U.S. Army Memorial Salute.

Walter was born in Mannheim Germany on July 30, 1946 to Halyna (Fedorak) and Wasyl Szewciw.  His family moved to the U.S. in 1959 and after graduating from high school in Hammond, Indiana, Walter became an American citizen in 1966.  Walter was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1969 to 1971 when he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.  Walter worked for the Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads for over 30 years, retiring in San Antonio Texas in 2007.  Walter was a loving, gentle giant who enjoyed spending time and talking with family, friends, co-workers and fellow 12-step devotees about life, perseverance, faith, accomplishment, and sports.

Walter is preceded in death by his mother Halyna and his father Wasyl Szewciw.

Walter is survived by his wife Anna (Procyk): daughter Sonya (David) Weed; brother Orest (Kathy) Szewciw;  brother-in-law Peter Procyk (Rae Jean), sister-in-law Patricia Procyk; grand-children Emma Weed and Brittney (Trent) Weed; great-grandchild Catherine Tillman; nephews Alex (Nikki) Szewciw, Adam Szewciw, Peter William (Amanda) Procyk; nieces Stephanie (Patrick) Yingling, Rebecca (Anthony) Henson.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Walter Schewciw may be directed to support thyroid cancer research at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, and mailed to PO Box 17029, Baltimore, MD, 21297-0129; or may be directed to the Inova Health Foundation, 8110 Gatehouse Road East, Falls Church VA 22042, Foundation@invoa.org in gratitude for the hospital's commitment and kindness to Walter as he struggled to overcome COPD.
