William "Bill" Knauer passed away December 27, 2016.
After graduating from the University of Delaware, he joined the US Army and served in Germany, Vietnam and Korea. Prior to retiring, he was stationed at the Pentagon. His rank at his military retirement was Lieutenant Colonel.
While in the Army, Bill completed a master's degree at the Naval Post Graduate School, attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA, and Defense Systems Management College at Fort Belvoir, VA. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and held the position of Grand Knight in New Jersey.
Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their four children and their spouses - Kimber and Steve, Bryant and Carolyn, Stacey and Mark, and Christopher and Kat. He has four brothers, three of whom are still living.
His retirement was spent visiting his children and ten grandchildren along the east coast. He loved playing golf at home in Virginia. But also, he would travel with his golf buddies to North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia. He carried his love of baseball from childhood into retirement where he was an avid Phillies and Nationals fan. He was truly honored to have an integral part in the building and construction of the new St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, VA.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, brother, cousin, and friend. His greatest role by far was being a grandfather. He truly loved all of his grandchildren - Matthew, David, Megan, Camryn, Tanner, Trevor, Erica, Jonathan, Joshua, and Erin. He cherished his one on one time with each of them and was amazed how they have grown into exceptional young adults. He will forever be known as " Grandpa Bill " "G-Bill", " Pa" & " GPop".
Forever in our hearts.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday January 3, 2016 @ 10:00 AM at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 101 Oakcrest Manor Drive, NE, Leesburg, VA 20176
A private burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date yet to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, our family would appreciate contributions to be made to the Building Fund at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, a place close to Bill's heart.
