The Rev. William Trent Newland, Jr. died peacefully of natural causes at his home in Ashburn, Virginia on March 30, 2016.
Bill was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on April 18, 1934. He was the only son of William Trent Newland, Sr. and Josephine Rubush Newland. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Ann Crawford Newland, and his sons, Michael Preston Newland and his wife Sarah, John Crawford Newland, and William Trent Newland, III and his wife Trace. He was the loving grandfather of Rachel Ann Newland, Chase Bradley Newland, Riley Anne Newland, Parker John Newland, Taylor Elizabeth Newland, Ethan Trent Newland, Preston Joseph Newland, and Lane Rachel Newland.
Bill attended Greenbriar Military Academy in Lewisburg, WV, and Graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA in 1955. He then served two years in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant.
He worked as a chemist at the E. I. Dupont Company in Parkersburg, WV, and Wilmington, DE. Mr. Newland was a graduate of the Virginia Theological Seminary and ordained to the priesthood in 1966. In his fifty years of ordained ministry, he assisted at St. John's Episcopal Church in Mt. Rainier, MD; served as Vicar of St. John's Episcopal Church in Arlington, VA; and worked as a pastoral counselor at the Pastoral Counseling Centers of Greater Washington, at Holy Comforter, Vienna, St. James, Leesburg, Grace Church, The Plains, and St. Thomas, McLean. He was called to interim ministry at Trinity Church, Arlington, and Trinity Church, Upperville. At the time of his death, Fr. Bill was serving as the retired Priest Associate at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Leesburg, VA, where he is lovingly remembered as "Father Bill."
He loved sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, playing golf with friends, sons, and grandsons, watching the Washington Redskins and the Washington Nationals, and loved dogs, including his devoted Redford.
There will be a viewing at the Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, VA on Sunday, April 3rd, from 1-3 pm. The funeral service for Fr. Bill will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, Leesburg, VA, on Monday, April 4th, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, Leesburg.
