Obituary

Winifred was born in Montreal, Canada on June 17, 1928. She died peacefully in her residence at Ashby Ponds Maple Grove in Leesburg, Virginia on April 28, 2019.

Winnie was the second daughter of the marriage of Henry J. Lees, Sr. to Minnie Holt who emigrated from England to Canada, then eventually from Canada to the United States.  Her older sister was Margaret Lees Stiles, born in Montreal, Canada (whom preceded Winnie in death.) Her brother is Henry J. Lees, Jr. (also known as Jim, Jimmy, or Hank) born in Brooklyn, New York.

She is survived by her family Henry Lees-brother, Karen Lees-Sister-in-law; Tracy Gibson-niece and her family, children Ryan Gibson-7, Cory Gibson-6 along with her husband Keith Gibson; Thomas Lees-nephew and his children Julia Lees-19, Thomas Lees, Jr.-17, Elizabeth Lees-15 and Liam Lees-12; Sue Williams-niece and her family, son Scott Williams along with her husband Ed Williams.

Winnie went to school in the United States in Brooklyn, New York and started working at Brown Brothers, Harriman, a Wall Street brokerage house, after high school.  She gained experience as a secretary and securities clerk.  After years she found a better position at Kidder Peabody Incorporated another Wall Street brokerage house work as an executive secretary for the syndication department which orchestrates how companies organize and sell their stock certificates on the New York and American Stock Exchanges.  Fifteen years later she moved to a much larger brokerage firm, Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith, and worked for the senior person who oversaw their syndication department.  One of the major stock issues they worked was on the first satellite communications network which had to be kept secret until first offering by many Wall Street brokerage houses on the same day. She met her husband, Herbert I. Losee, Jr., (whom preceded Winnie in death), who worked at another firm on Wall Street and they married in August 1968.

Winifred loved to sew.  She took lessons, made her own patterns, had three special sewing machines and made everything from sportswear to evening gowns and items for home décor.  She belonged to American Sewing Guild in Florida – a very active club that put-on fashion shows with the clothes they made and had luncheons with sewing people from all over the South East United States.

Winnie loved spending the holidays with family. Every Christmas she would arrive with multiple containers of her fabulous homemade cookies…chocolate chip, butterscotch, oatmeal raisin, and more. This was always a special treat and made everyone very happy! Winnie also loved shopping with Karen, her sister-in-law and her niece Tracy for after Christmas bargains. She always said that "They found the best bargains!"

Several years after her husband's death, Winnie moved from Spring Hill, Florida to northern Virginia.  She moved into an independent living apartment at Ashby Ponds then into a memory care unit at Maple Grove. After moving to Virginia, Winnie was able to enjoy many more family gatherings and celebrations, and special visits from her nephew Tom's two dogs, Gibbs and Apache. Which she enjoyed immensely!

Winnie will be greatly missed by family and friends. We all have so many cherished memoires of her to help comfort us, and we know that she is at peace.  Maple Grove staff always found Winnie's smile infectiously refreshing.  She also had a pleasant disposition and did not request much assistance on her own.  Medical, support staff, and managers all commented that they will miss Winnie's presence on the 4 th floor of Maple Grove.
