Obituary

Henry Hugh Frain passed away on July 11th, 2024, at home in Charleston, SC. Henry grew up in Washington, D.C. as the youngest of three brothers, where he attended McKinley Technical High School. From a young age, Henry was ambitious and drove himself to become the Captain of his High School Football team and Senior Class President. Henry went on to play football in college earning a full scholarship to Syracuse University. Unfortunately, a knee injury forced him to change directions his freshman year. Henry transferred to George Washington University where he played baseball and became a proud member of the Washington City Rho chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Most importantly for him, it was where he met his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Robinson Frain.

Henry loved golf and became a proficient golfer participating in several Pro-Am tournaments, including the 1988 Phoenix Open PRO-AM and the 2002 Buick Scramble.  Henry did not just play sports for his own pleasure but spent hours sharing his love of sports with kids of all ages. He served as Commissioner for the Beltway Football League while helping to build the Maplewood club. He coached little league baseball for several years with the Rockville Boys Baseball Association and was a fixture at many a grandchild's sporting events.

Henry was always up for a challenge. He played Scrabble with a dictionary nearby to prove he wasn't making up words. Bridge, crossword and sudoku puzzles were a part of his regular routine. He liked to challenge his family as well with high expectations, however alongside those high expectations came a willingness to assist them in any way he could. Henry was a generous person, asking not for acknowledgment, but simply for the opportunity to see others benefit from his support. Henry found great pride in the success of his loved ones in their own endeavors.

Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Frain, as well as his two older Brothers, Glen and Francis "Franny" Frain.  Henry is survived by his two children and their spouses: Karen & Sid Cochran and Bryan & Amy Frain. He will be missed by his grandchildren: Craig & Danielle Cochran, Cyndi & Patrick Thompson, Brittany & Jason Bowen, Tina & Josh Edmonds, Kate Frain, Lily Frain, Jack Frain, and Melanie & Amanda Cochran. Along with his seven great-grandchildren: Laynie, Liam, Jackson, Dylan, Bryant, Owen, and Calder.

A public gathering will be held on Saturday August 10th, 2024 beginning at 12:00pm followed by a memorial service at 1:00pm at the Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg.
