With sadness we announce the passing of Jack Halterman, adoring husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and true gentleman. Jack had most recently been living in Leesburg, Virginia and prior to that was a 50+ year resident of Ravensworth Farm in Springfield, Virginia. Jack passed away on July 7, 2024. He was 89.
Jack was born to Rex and Crete Halterman in Aurora, Missouri in 1934 and grew up with two older brothers, Russell and Danny, all of whom predeceased him. He was a 1952 graduate of Aurora High School as a multi-sport athlete, including a brief tryout for the St. Louis Cardinals, and a 1958 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University, majoring in Geography and Geology, also playing several sports. After college, he served two years in the US Army, stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Fort Belvoir. In January 1963, he married the love of his life, Virginia Wilkerson, also an Aurora kid, at her parents' house in Aurora.
After the Army, he planned to become a teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Instead, he saw a job posting for a photo interpretation analyst at CIA in Washington DC and gave it a shot. He onboarded in September 1963 as an Imagery Analyst in the National Photographic Interpretation Center, shortly after NPIC's founding. He loved his job, working on cutting-edge imagery analysis from U2 spy planes to satellites, from film to digital, and across a wide variety of geographies and geopolitical issues. He was particularly proud of his work in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, the Middle East during the conflicts there in the 1970s, and the Gulf War in the early 1990s. He also served three extended-duty temporary assignments supporting various activities. He retired from CIA in 1994 as deputy division chief overseeing imagery analysis directed against weapons proliferation and international weapons transfers. While there, he received numerous letters of commendation and certificates of merit.
Jack enjoyed 30 years of retired life and loved every minute of it. He was an avid golfer his whole life, spending envious amounts of time at his favorite course, Twin Lakes in Clifton, Virginia. He enjoyed reading and history, with the Civil War a keen interest, and spent hours documenting family genealogy. He also tinkered around the house and yard where his attempts to grow grass in shady areas were legendary and which finally resulted in several trees being removed for the sake of a lush lawn. Additionally, he and Ginny traveled but were most fond of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, with a stop at Pierce's BBQ in Williamsburg on the way of course!
Jack is survived by his loving and treasured wife, Ginny, of Leesburg. He is also survived by two children, Matthew and his wife Carolyn of Urbana, Maryland, and Alix Smith and her husband, Douglas, of Leesburg. He absolutely adored his three grandsons, Patrick, William, and Jackson and so enjoyed the time he spent with them including visits to as many sporting events and other activities as he could. They were his pride and joy. He is also survived by numerous cherished nieces and nephews as well as long-time friends from Aurora, Ravensworth, and the agency. The family would also like to acknowledge the staff at Poet's Walk in Leesburg as well as Capital Caring Hospice both of whom took wonderful care of him over the past year.
Join us in celebrating Jack's life on Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Tuscarora Mill restaurant in Leesburg, Virginia. We invite you to drop by anytime during these hours. Jack will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Dad was a humble, calm, selfless, and patient man and we were so fortunate to be able to spend those years in his presence learning from him, talking with him, golfing with him, fishing with him, criticizing politicians with him, and watching the grass grow with him. We are all so lucky to have had him as a husband, dad, and granddad
