Obituary

With heavy hearts and fond memories, we announce the passing of Peggy Jo Grehan Dunford, who left us peacefully at her home in Hamilton, Virginia, surrounded by her beloved family on July 30, 2024. Born on October 19, 1947, Peggy was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.

Peggy is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 50 years, Robert Dunford. She is survived by her two daughters, Erin M. Dunford and Christie Dunford McKenzie, son-in-law, David McKenzie, and three granddaughters, Julia, Abigail, and Rachel McKenzie, who called her Gran and were the light of her life. She took immense joy in their interests, activities, and their company.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Ignatius Grehan and Margaret Cecilia Grehan. Peggy also leaves behind her sister, Patricia Grehan Welch, and numerous nieces and nephews, who affectionately remember her as a source of unconditional love.

A beloved member of the Hamilton community, Peggy's warmth and generosity were felt by all who knew her. She had a special gift for bringing people together, and her home served as a place of comfort and joy. Peggy sought to care for others through a life of dedicated service. For many years, Peggy served with friends and family at Harmony United Methodist Church in Hamilton, VA. She provided protection as a substitute crossing guard for Loudoun County. She faithfully worked for Mary Lou Raymond and various real estate companies in Hamilton and Leesburg. She attended to every detail as a dedicated bookkeeper for O. Leland Mahan in Leesburg, VA. Often, Peggy could be found shopping or traveling with her family, sister and nieces. Friends and family will remember her heartfelt thank you cards and notes, detailed written memories and photographs, Easter egg coloring, Halloween pumpkin carving, Christmas cookie baking, jigsaw puzzles, coffee breaks with friends, weekend brunches at Clyde's and lunches at Blue Ridge Grill, trips to Walt Disney World, and annual Virginia Beach vacations where "Dairy Queen was just down the street."

Her family takes solace in the beautiful memories they shared with Peggy and the lasting impact she made on their lives and the lives of others. She will be deeply missed, even as her memory is cherished.

An informal gathering to celebrate Peggy's life and visit with family and friends will occur on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 10 AM-12 PM at Harmony United Methodist Church in Hamilton, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites anyone who wishes to make a donation to the Hamilton Volunteer Rescue Squad in memory of Peggy.
