Susan Poremba
Welsh
April 27, 1932 – December 18, 2025
Susan Poremba Welsh passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, in Leesburg, Virginia. She was born on April 27, 1932, in New York City and grew up in Baldwin Harbor on Long Island—a place that always remained close to her heart.
As a young woman, Susan brought both grace and determination to everything she did. She was known for her spirited and strong-willed personality that made her unforgettable. She modeled for Barbizon before proudly serving four years in the United States Marine Corps. Stationed at Camp Pendleton and MCB Hawaii, she distinguished herself and was named Lady Marine of the Year for outstanding service. She went on to pursue her education at George Washington University, where she earned a degree in education.
In 1958, she married Stanley Poremba Jr., a Naval Academy midshipman who swept her off her feet. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, traveling to Virginia, Hawaii, and California. Along the way, Susan raised four children, two sons and two daughters.
In the 1980s, she began teaching full-time at Saint Bernadette Catholic School, where she became a cherished teacher and mentor to many. She also served as an active member of the accreditation team for Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.
Susan enjoyed volunteering with Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and the Loudoun County Volunteer Fire Department, and she served as part of Loudoun County’s election poll workers. She traveled widely throughout her life and visited many places around the world. She also enjoyed needlepoint and loved her poodles.
In 2002, Susan made her home at Falcons Landing, where she later married John D. Welsh (Jack) in 2006. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Stanley and Jack, and her son, Kip. She leaves behind her children, Cheri, Sean, and Rebecca; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
